I have enjoyed John Reidy's work for nearly seventeen years.
That pisses me off because nothing should be for seventeen years. That just makes me feel old; but I am pretty sure I picked up my first copy of his "'zine", the Hooligan, sometime around 1995.
In '98 I started advertising in it, and reading it regularly.
It was always entertaining and excruciatingly vulgar.
Over the next ten years Reidy took the Hooligan digital, wrote semi-regularly for the Westword, helped run a small business and started novels he'll never finish.
In 2008 I approached John about doing a sports podcast - at a baby shower for someone's illegitimate kid.
We ordered some Chinese-made equipment from Sound Town and got to work - if you call making fun of J.R. Smith work.
We have collaborated on the South Stands Denver Fancast ever since. He hosts the show and handles the segues and I yell a lot.
It's a match made in 10% sports heaven.
It was my idea to add a Denver sports blog, something along the lines of Deadspin (only local), to the Podcast site.
But, until last week, John had a writing gig - on top of a full time job and a couple of kids. So I handled the blogging (along with guest writers to whom I owe huge thanks).
I have been reposting John's Jock Itch columns here since the we launched the site. They ran weekly at the A/V Club Denver / Boulder and they were awesome. Some of the best sports writing in Colorado, if you ask me.
But John quit and I'm glad.
I'll miss Jock Itch but I could not be happier that John will now do his sports writing right here at South Stands Denver.
You never know when Sports Illustrated may call, though.
The dude is that good. We really hope you enjoy his new regular columns here at the 'Stands.
Please welcome him with lots and lots of clicks. And links. And likes and pins and whatever else the internet comes up with.
