“Who Needs Melo! Who Needs Melo! Who Needs Melo! Who Needs Melo!” I can still hear the chants in the Pepsi Center. The electrictricity going through the crowd! The passion. The camaraderie. Dubbed “The New-Look Nuggets” the team was expected to be the “Cavs of the West” but in turn, minus superstar Carmelo Anthony, entered the postseason ranked fifth in the west. Yes, they lost to the OKC Thunder 4-1 in the finals, but they weren't swept like Anthony’s new team, the New York Knicks, in round one by the Boston Celtics. So this lingering question remains:
Why are Nuggets fans so bitter?? Why do they still LOATHE Carmelo and the Knicks??
More than likely it was the feeling of being replaced by a TRENDIER, CLEANER model. However, I can only speak for myself, but this is where I am getting at, my point to this whole post.
I HAVE GOTTEN OVER CARMELO ANTHONY!!
Yes, I, MRS. NBA, just said that. If you are reading this and are one of my Twitter followers, you understand how GROUND BREAKING that is. Let’s back up a minute to when Carmelo was still at Syracuse. Carmelo led Syracuse to their first national title in 2003 and led the team in scoring, rebounding, minutes played, field goals made, and attempted.
So, “who needed Melo” then??
Well, apparently Syracuse.
The Denver Nuggets would proceed on and draft Carmelo third, behind LeBron (Cleveland) and Darko, yeah Darko (Detroit). During his rookie year, he became the second youngest player to score 30 or more points in the game. That first year with Melo, Denver ended the season 43-39 versus the 17-65 record from the season before. Carmelo’s arrival turned Denver from the NBA’s laughingstock to a playoff contender.
So “who needed Melo” then?? Apparently, the Nuggets.
2003-2004 NBA Season: Denver Nuggets eliminated in 5 games by the Minnesota Timberwolves
2004-2005 NBA Season: Denver Nuggets eliminated in 5 games by the San Antonio Spurs.
2005-2006 NBA Season: Won Northwest division. Denver Nuggets eliminated in 5 games by the Los Angeles Clippers.
2006-2007 NBA Season: Denver Nuggets eliminated in 5 games by the San Antonio Spurs.
2007-2008 NBA Season: First 50 win season since 1987-’88 season. Denver Nuggets eliminated in 4 games by the Los Angeles Lakers.
2008-2009 NBA Season: Won Northwest division. Denver Nuggets beat the New Orleans Hornets in 5 games. Denver Nuggets beat the Dallas Mavericks in 5 games in the semi-finals. Denver made it to the Western Conference Finals but was eliminated by the Los Angeles Lakers in 6 games.
2009-2010 NBA Season: Won the Northwest division. Denver Nuggets was eliminated by the Utah Jazz in 6 games.
2010-2011 NBA Season: The Melo blockbuster trade transpired. Melo and the New York Knicks were eliminated in 4 games by the Boston Celtics, while the Denver Nuggets were eliminated in 5 games by the OKC Thunder.
So “who needed Melo” then?? Apparently, Denver and then New York.
Nugget fans rejoiced. Why?? Because they won one more game than Carmelo. Shit, I did too. It made fans feel good, inside, to see Melo collapse on a national stage, to hear New York fans booing him, it made us, the jilted lovers, delighted.
But 10 months later??? I’m over it.
Carmelo Anthony generated a sense of relevancy for Denver that had not been seen in A-G-E-S. 8 straight playoff appearances, and yes, he did aid in our playoff appearance last season, and NOW he’s a bum??? Before the 2004 playoff appearance, the last time the Nuggets had seen the post season was in 1995. The franchise was a complete and utter joke to the league, but that changed once the offensive-driven Melo came to the Mile High and we were given the chance to see 8 consecutive post seasons. Was he a bum, then??
So, tell me, “who needed Melo”???
Sure, we lost in the first round multiple times, but at least with Melo, Denver was given the POSSIBILITY to advance. That stellar 2008-2009 NBA season????? Nobody was beating Kobe, N-O-B-O-D-Y!!!
Melo took Denver as far as was humanly possible and, as a Nugget fan, I appreciate that. Ask me this 3 months ago and I would have muttered these words:
FUCK MELODY!!! This is where I get to the tricky trade shenanigans. Who wouldn’t want to play ball in New York???
Be absolutely honest with yourself. Who knows what kind of soiled or not so soiled relationship Anthony had with Coach Karl? I, now, can’t fault a man for choosing to better his career, even if it tore the hearts of thousands. Now, I come to this: did I hate Melo because he left??
NO.
Let’s back up for just a moment, I never liked Melo, I appreciated and respected him because he did wonders for my team, but I just have this thing with grown men in braids. Don’t ask. Even after he cut them, that braided Melo image was embedded in my brain. But I digress, it wasn’t that Melo left that he had me in pieces, we all realized this from the toast at his wedding with LaLa that he was, emotionally, in another city, but the fact that it took Chauncey Billups away.
If you don’t live in Denver or at the very least in Colorado, you can’t understand or appreciate what Billups means to the City and what the City means to Billups. That trade took away our “Uncle” ….he was Denver…he is Denver.
I’m not a crying female, but when I was on twitter, *SHOCKER* , that night and the news was confirmed, I cried. Yes, I cried over basketball. I woke up the next morning feeling distraught, angry, PISSED. Who else to be mad at?????
MEEELLLLOOOOOOO!!! That’s where my anger came from, not that Melo chose to leave, just that Billups was caught in the shuffle.
Knowing this, I am glad the trade went down.
Wait, what??
Perhaps, not in the manner and all the hoopla, but I am glad it happened. It gave the team, the franchise, the fans this renewed vigor. It was exciting to watch and the first time “Who needs Melo” was chanted, well, I’ll be honest:
IT FELT FUCKING GOOD!!! Without that trade, we wouldn't have speedy Ty Lawson starting, no sexy passes from Gallo, no Mozzila giving the audience these awkward and boyish smiles, we wouldn't have Jordan Hamilton from the Felton trade. We wouldn't have any of that.
My whole point is, rather than hating Melo, 10 months later, I appreciate what he did for the franchise. I appreciate him being generic during the media blabber-thons, so we could obtain as much as possible from New York. After all, it worked, right?? I appreciate those positive things that he did for this city. Am I wrong??
That’s why I am over Melo. While, I won’t be buying a New York Knicks Carmelo Antony jersey any time soon nor will I be putting “Team Melo” in my twitter bio, but I also won’t be wishing him to fail. He was a Denver Nugget after all. Once upon a time, I did do the whole “MEEEELLLLOOOOO” thing at the Pepsi Center, so shouldn’t I wish him well???
While, I never did purchase a Melo #15 jersey, I never got why fans burned theirs???? While, I still think he is an utter douche off the court, he’s “aight” on the court. While, I think he talks like there is a canary in his mouth, but he is an NBA player after all. So, after 149 days of the lockout, it actually did some good.
The NBA lockout finally got me over Melo.
Oh, but I’ll still boo his ass at the Pepsi Center, Until next time,
Mrs. NBA
